Welcome To The 60's

Yesterday, I saw Hairspray. First of all, being the dork that I am it took me 30 minutes to find the entrance of the Place Des Arts before realizing that it was right next to where my father left me(in my defense, the entrance didn't looked very official, it was just an underground door). And after that it took me 15 minutes to find where the Wilfred Pelletier Hall was. I freaked out because Place Des Arts is a very big place (there's like a DVD store, 2 museum, 3 halls and 5 restaurants) and some of the people who hang out there are kind of creepy. But I finally find where it was and I was fine.

When I entered the hall entrance, I felt like kind of a fish out of water because 1) I couldn't find the door that leaded to my seat 2) Everyone was so serious and wearing designer clothes, while I was wearing clothes from American Eagle.

My seat was in the 4th row,but all the seat of the first 3 rows were empty it was kind of like if I was in the 1st row. The pre-show announcement was so funny “The show takes place in 1962, before iPhone, Blackberry and digital cam-recorders were invited. So please turn off your cellphones and don't use any recording devices”.After that the show started and I had a blast. If you liked the movie you will LOVE the stage show. The story flows better, it is more colorful, funny and there's more song. As lovely as the movie is, it doesn't capture the fun spirit of the show. The only thing that bothered me in the show was that although they were amazing that the actresses who played Velma Von Tussle and Prudy Pingleton looked a little bit too young to be the mother of a teenager.

Some little details I loved:
You know that character who has to leave for “just nine months” (I think her name is Brenda). Well, we keep seeing her in some dance scenes and she had sickness every single of them.

When Amber said “Link. Come here!” like if he was a dog.

Brooklyn Pulver was playing Tracy and she was so energetic, you couldn't help but just love the character. Jerry O'Boyle was playing Edna and he was great. He totally used just the right amount of manliness and feminity. Amber Rees played Penny and she was Hi-La-Ri-Ous. She litterally stole every scenes by doing those random dorky things. Penny reminds me so much of myself. Erin Sullivan played Amber and she was so adorably evil. I loved how she used that whiny squeaky voice for the character. Lisa Linette played Motormouth Maybelle and she was such a powerhouse. Her last note in I Know Where I Been blew me away. Drew Davidson played Wilbur, he was great, but there wasn't nothing memorable in his performance. Kate Feerick played Prudy Pingleton/Gym Teacher/Matron and she was hilarious. Ariel Tyler Page played Velma Von Hassle and she was wonderfully evil. Matthew Ragas played Link and he was amazing. He had his way to make every female audience members feel like he is singing a love song just for her. He had a very great chemistry with Brooklyn. John Ewards played Seaweed and he was so energetic. Marsena Eunice Bowers played Little Inez and she was so adorable.

My only complaint is the audience. It was mostly completely quiet. I was always the one who had started the applause, because otherwise no one would have applauded. Also, I was often the only person who would laugh at the jokes and get the references.

After the show, I went to the stage door. Since it was literally at the opposite side of the entrance I had to run to get there and be sure I wouldn't miss anybody. All the cast members were nice , and they happily signed my program. Although you could them that some of them were in a hurry. Special mention to Evie Hutton and
(I think) Anthony Johnson who both respectively complimented my hair and my Wicked handbag. Also , another special mention to Brooklyn Pulver, Amber Rees and (I think) Ariel Tyler Page who tried to say “Bon Soir”(good night in french) to the employees of Place Des Arts.

Here's a pictue of my signed program:
